However, the new insides still drive a feature set that has been tweaked and tuned to the needs of consumers in a new safety product category. Rather than change, there¡¯s addition. The MN312S gets better Bluetooth, better connectivity options, faster navigation and a safety suite backed by a U.S.-based call center and more than 10 years assisting drivers with everything from stolen vehicle location to emergency dispatch and roadside assistance.
The Planet Behind the Driver
Press a button on the MN312S inscribed with a little red planet and your Bluetooth-connected wireless phone calls the Guidepoint Systems call center in Ft. Worth, Texas. Based on the subscription plan (a Guidepoint hideaway mobile is also required for some services and available separately), Guidepoint¡¯s live call center representatives offer everything from helping recover a stolen vehicle to providing directions and ordering flowers on a forgotten anniversary. In an accident, they send emergency response vehicles to your GPS-enabled location and help with roadside assistance in non-life-threatening situations.
In comparison with its predecessor, the MN312S gets improved hands free functionality with a high-sensitivity microphone built into the mirror frame and two options for voice playback: internal speaker or audio system. Gone is the FM modulator in favor of a direct-connect 1/8-inch plug designed to take advantage of the AUX jacks that are more prevalent in newer vehicles. When not using the hands free function, this direct connection serves another purpose: delivering streaming audio¡ªreceived at the MN312S from a Bluetooth-connected phone¡ªto the car stereo. Essentially, the MN312S adds streaming Bluetooth audio to vehicles that don¡¯t come equipped with this feature.
Preferred Features over FMV
In comparison with another replacement mirror, the OnStar FMV, Rydeen¡¯s MN312S represents a difference in philosophy. Rather than solely relying on voice-driven functionality, which is not always practical (studies have shown that most people prefer voice and visual prompts compared to voice only), the MN312S gives the user instant control over navigation functions, without having to deal with an operator, and without service fees. This is especially helpful regarding Lane Assistance and routing around detours. In addition, the inclusion of an automatic rear camera view when in reverse puts both the real and digital rear view in the same, logical space.
Rydeen is expecting to ship the MN312S next month (June). Go to facebook.com/rydeenmobile and Like to page to be updated when it is available, and visit rydeenmobile.com to see video of the MN312S and other upcoming Rydeen products in action.
